Based on a report by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, about 60% of convicted burglars stated the presence of a security system influenced their decision to target another home. While security yard signs and security window stickers are deterrents, there is no substitute for front door cameras (where many break-ins occur.

ALWAYS LOCK DOORS

Only 20 percent of burglaries occur at night and an incredible 60 percent happen between 10am and 3:30pm – the middle of the day when most are at home or work. Even if you live in a safe neighborhood, locking your doors provides another layer of security that can reduce the chances you will become a victim. Another thing to remember is to not leave spare keys in an obvious location. Should you be concerned about getting locked out, know that keyless locks do provide an advanced level of security.

INVEST IN SECURITY SYSTEMS

Criminals prefer to break into homes that don’t have a home security system for good reason – there is less of a chance that they will get caught. Investing in a home security system reduces the risk of break-ins dramatically and can alert homeowners to other issues including fires and the presence of carbon monoxide.

SECURE COMMUNITIES

Protecting your home also means protecting your neighborhood. Consider starting or joining a neighborhood watch program, monitoring crime statistics and reporting any suspicious persons to the authorities immediately.
