Choosing the Right Home Security Company

You’ve probably thought about getting a security system for your home, on more than a couple occasions. You’ve also heard people say things like “that’s the world we live in now-a-days”, following a tragedy. With almost daily reminders the world demands we remain active regarding our personal and family’s security. When you decide to secure your home and family with a security system, an equally important decision is making sure you choose the “right” security company to perform the installation and monitoring. When trying to choose the right home security company, there are a few simple guidelines to follow.

Researching Providers

When researching home security providers, your main concern is likely to be to find a company that is both highly rated and affordable. Most consumers only know of one or two “big” providers, yet there are several smaller providers that may available to you as well. Not many consumers like to be treated like a just dollar sign and a number, so make sure you find a provider that has their priorities lined up with yours.

An good first step is to ask family and/or neighbors who they use and what kind of experiences they’ve had, what services they use, how much the company charges and other details. Some other specific things that can be done include:

• Research home security company on community sites like “Yelp!”
• Ask insurance agent, friends for referrals
• Contact police department for recommendations
• Contact Better Business Bureau to check ratings of prospective companies

  Once the search has been narrowed to just a few companies, contact each of them and arrange for a visit from a representative. The representative will do an evaluation of your home and make recommendations of alarm products based on which services you are looking for.

Meeting with the Representative

Here are some questions that are good to ask a representative that may determine how interested you will be in moving forward with that company. Some of these questions can include:

• How long has the company been in business?
• Do you have 24 Hour monitoring?
• Is the monitoring station “5 diamond Certified”? (the highest standard for Alarm monitoring stations)
• Is there is actual person I can call if I problems with my alarm?

If the representative hesitates or does not fully answer any of these questions, it’s probably best to look elsewhere. If a family is satisfied with the answers, it’s time to get recommendations and a written quote from the representative. Whatever is recommended, ask why the representative chose that option and listen closely to the answer. A rep who seems confident in the choices made and who can easily explain all the details of a system is probably someone worth doing business with. By taking the time to do some research on home security companies, it’s possible to come away with a system that will provide peace of mind to the whole family.
