It happened again in May 2015. Another alleged porch pirate was caught on video surveillance pilfering in Chicago. That time it took place in Bucktown but as other news stories have shown us, it can literally happen anywhere in the Windy City. Case in point, last Christmas there were a rash of porch pirating incidents on the North Side. As result, we wanted to share our Chicago security company’s tips for stopping porch pirates in their tracks:
Do consider following the advice of Chicago’s law enforcement officers and the U.S. Postal Service. They often recommend taking advantage of scheduling apps, package hold options, alternate delivery sites and the kindness of neighbors. Some will also suggest installing outside lights and keeping vision blocking elements to a minimum as ways to deter pirates.
Although they are all great tips, they’re not enough to stop porch pirates completely. For that, consider installing home security systems that offer 24/7 monitoring and a suite of additional services. A few that come to our minds are motion detectors, door contacts, live streaming video, remote access DVR records and instant alert.
Why those particular elements and not others? In our experience, they’ll allow you, as well as law enforcement officers, to get a visual on the porch pirates while they’re still in the act. As such, the chances of catching them before your package ends up lost forever are high. Now that’s truly stopping them in their tracks! However, it is important to make home security system purchases wisely.
For example, porch pirates are notoriously fast. If the conditions are right, they can literally grab a package and go in a minute. Therefore, it is vital to choose a system that sends instant alerts and begins recording live video quickly. Otherwise, the only video recording you and law enforcement may end up with is one that shows an empty porch.
Those are just a few things to keep in mind. To continue discussing our Chicago security company’s tips for stopping porch pirates, please contact us directly for a free consultation.
